Les alcalino-terreux présents dans l'eau sont amenés à former un complexe du type chélate par le sel disodique de l'acide éthylènediaminetétracétique. La disparition des dernières traces d'éléments libres à doser est décelée par le virage d'un indicateur spécifique. En milieu convenablement tamponné pour empêcher la précipitation du magnésium, la méthode permet de doser la somme des ions calcium et magnésium.
